I first took notice with the launch of the free cup of coffee when you vote promotion. If you have seen Girl Effect, you know how powerful kinetic typography can be at communicating powerful messages without the use of a single image. We as designers are always quick to concept a powerful visual to communicate the message. Then we pick up the phone and call our favorite photographer. Done. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves the most powerful imagery is sometimes no imagery at all.

I've been a fan of Pandora and last.fm for while but recently discovered lala.com and it's changing the way I listen to music. Lala offers everything and then some to the world social music. Create an account, get your 50 free credits and I guarantee you'll be hooked.

 

They have over 6 million songs for download at just 89¢ a pop. The first listen of any song is free. Subsequent listens are restricted to 30 second samples and users prompted to add the song to their collection. This is where things get interesting. The more a user listens to a particular artist the higher they climb on the "top listeners" ladder. Users can also see who has listened to the artists and songs they are interested in and discover new music through other user profile pages. Members helping members with similar taste in music discover new music. It's a beautiful thing.

 

Lala.com is for people to who want to share music and discover new music at the same time. From a social music media standpoint, lala.com is firing on all cylinders.
